I have no clue if it could have to do with your kernel config -- it
could be, but I have no knowledge of any kernel settings that could
affect this. But it is definitely a kernel problem or a hardware problem
-- and I'm not sure which. The latest version of laptop mode tools
(1.47) has a battery-level-polling module which helps out in your
situation. You could use that to make it work for you.
