OK, let's check some things. Did you reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 when you upgrade=

the drive, or did you somehow transfer the installation to the new drive?
And if you did a reinstall, are you sure you applied the exact same setting=
s
as before?
In a state where the machine is supposed to be in laptop mode (e.g. on
battery), could you run the following command:
/usr/sbin/laptop_mode status
and send us the output?
Another thing you could try is using the non-lobotomized latest version of
laptop-mode-tools, which you can download from here:
http://samwel.tk/laptop_mode/packages/debian
Ubuntu is great, but they have adapted laptop-mode-tools in ways that are
not always very helpful, and I'm not sure what the particular quirks of you=
